Chrissie & John's West Auckland Manor House Wedding – A Sun-Soaked Spring Celebration
When I arrived at West Auckland Manor House Hotel on a gloriously warm spring afternoon, I had a feeling this day was going to be something special. And it was. From start to finish, Chrissie and John’s wedding was full of sunshine, laughter, and love – the kind of wedding every photographer hopes to be part of.
As a North East wedding photographer, I’ve been fortunate enough to capture some incredible days – but this one was truly something else. Set against the picturesque backdrop of one of County Durham’s most charming venues, the day was relaxed, elegant, emotional, and brimming with joy. Let me take you through it, one magical moment at a time.
Chilled Vibes & Gorgeous Bridal Prep
I’ve witnessed many bridal preparations over the years, but I have to say – Chrissie’s was the most chilled I’ve ever seen.
No chaos. No last-minute rush. Just calm laughter, soft music, and the kind of warmth that makes you feel instantly welcome. Chrissie was surrounded by her incredible bridesmaids, each of them glowing with excitement, and of course, the star of the day – little flower girl Tilly – who completely stole the show with her sweet smile and sparkly eyes. Honestly, if there were a “Flower Girl of the Year” award, Tilly would have walked it.
Chrissie looked breathtaking – her dress was a perfect blend of classic and contemporary elegance, and her smile never left her face the entire day.
Dapper Gents & Wedding Day Nerves
Meanwhile, over with the boys, things were just as heartwarming. John, looking every bit the proud groom, was suited and booted alongside his best man Graham and his son Joshua, who was not only part of the wedding party but also preparing to give a speech later in the day.
There was a little nervous energy – especially from Joshua, who was feeling the weight of his upcoming speech – but there was also pride, laughter, and genuine affection. They looked fantastic in tailored suits, with those finishing touches that really made them shine.
I always try to spend a bit of time with both sides of the wedding party before the ceremony – and these moments with John, Graham, and Joshua were a joy to photograph. Honest, real, and full of meaning.
A Ceremony Bathed in Light & Love
The ceremony room at West Auckland Manor House is something special – bright, airy, and absolutely filled with natural light. But what made this particular ceremony so beautiful wasn’t just the venue. It was the love in the room.
As Chrissie walked down the aisle, you could feel the emotion. I’ve photographed countless weddings, but that moment – when John saw Chrissie for the first time – was magic. That look? That’s why I do this.
The room was full of friends and family, every one of them beaming. There were a few happy tears, a lot of laughter, and an overwhelming sense of connection between everyone present. It was a privilege to capture.
Sun-Kissed Celebrations on the Lawn
After the ceremony, guests spilled out onto the lawns to enjoy the glorious weather. It honestly felt more Mediterranean than North East England!
There were glasses of fizz, hugs all round, and people enjoying the sun. One of my favourite parts of any wedding day is capturing these in-between moments – the unposed interactions, the shared glances, the laughter that bubbles up when people are simply enjoying life.
With the afternoon sun casting a golden glow, we gathered everyone for some formal photos at the front of the Manor House. The historic façade made a stunning backdrop, and with the garden in full bloom, it was picture-perfect.
Speeches to Remember – Especially Joshua’s!
After everyone had taken their seats for the wedding breakfast, it was time for the speeches – and wow, they did not disappoint.
Peter (who walked Chrissie down the aisle) spoke from the heart, John and Graham were brilliant, Amy had everone laughing – funny, heartfelt, and full of warmth. But the moment that really stood out was Joshua’s speech.
I’d seen those nerves earlier in the day, but you wouldn’t have known it at all. He delivered his words with such poise and emotion that there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. It was a reminder that weddings aren’t just about two people getting married – they’re about families growing, bonds deepening, and love being celebrated in all its forms.
Joshua absolutely nailed it. His dad looked so proud. I definitely got something in my eye during that bit (purely camera dust, of course...).
Romantic Golden Hour Portraits
As the speeches wrapped up and the golden hour approached, I whisked Chrissie and John away for a little quiet time – just the two of them, and my camera.
West Auckland Manor House has so many incredible little spots for portraits – from ivy-covered walls to sweeping lawns and grand entranceways. With the evening light turning everything into gold, it was the perfect time to capture their connection in a more intimate way.
Chrissie and John were natural in front of the camera – laughing, chatting, soaking it all in. These portraits are some of my favourites from the day. Pure love. No posing. Just two people on the happiest day of their lives.
Let’s Dance – 80s Style!
Evening celebrations kicked off in the best possible way – with Chrissie and John’s first dance, set to a classic 80s hit by The Human League.
Let me tell you, the energy in the room went through the roof. That song choice had everyone singing along, and by the time the beat kicked in, the dancefloor was packed.
There’s something about 80s music at weddings – it brings everyone together. From older guests to the younger crowd, there was a shared joy that carried through the entire evening. Laughter, dancing, singing – everything you want from a wedding party.
