Runa Farm: A Premier Wedding Destination

What the Appartment Group say about Runa Farm:

Runa Farm, is an intensely rustic inspired hotel, country pub and wedding venue quite unlike any other, combining natural rural beauty with cool Balearic vibes to deliver something wholly unique, as its guests will discover…

In brief, it was our plan to create an individual and special destination for “boho, honest and earthy” experiences with the farm and its produce at the very heart.

As a wedding photographer, I always aim to capture the essence of a venue—its history, atmosphere, and the emotions it evokes. Next week, I’ll be photographing a wedding at Runa Farm, a venue that has quickly become one of the North East’s most coveted wedding spots. Previously known as Jersey Farm, this property underwent an extensive refurbishment under The Apartment Group's guidance, transforming it into the enchanting Runa Farm we know today.

To do justice to the wedding, I’ve been researching the history, design, and unique features of Runa Farm, so I can fully understand what makes this venue so special. Here’s a deep dive into the story behind Runa Farm and the key elements I’ll be focusing on to ensure I don’t miss a moment.

The History of Runa Farm: From Jersey Farm to a Wedding Haven

Jersey Farm had a long-standing reputation as a beloved local venue. Originally a working farm, it evolved into a hotel and restaurant, becoming a cherished spot for locals and visitors to Barnard Castle. Its rustic charm and warm hospitality made it a popular choice for events, including weddings.

However, as time passed and wedding trends shifted, The Apartment Group saw an opportunity to revitalize the venue. Known for their ability to turn spaces into extraordinary destinations, they took on the challenge of transforming Jersey Farm. In 2021, they reintroduced the property as Runa Farm, a name inspired by the old Norse word “Runa,” meaning “secret” or “whisper.” This name perfectly reflects the intimate and mystical ambiance that the venue now offers.

The Refurbishment: A Blend of Rustic and Contemporary

The refurbishment of Runa Farm was more than just an update; it was a complete reimagining of the space. The goal was to preserve the rural charm of the original farm while integrating modern, luxurious elements that appeal to today’s couples.

Architectural and Interior Design

The architectural integrity of Runa Farm remains rooted in its agricultural past, with features like exposed wooden beams, stone walls, and large barn doors still prominent. However, these elements have been enhanced with modern amenities and stylish interiors.

The interiors are a carefully curated blend of natural materials and high-end finishes. Reclaimed wood, polished concrete, and luxurious textiles are used throughout, creating a warm yet sophisticated atmosphere. The color palette is soft and earthy, which I know will provide a timeless and elegant backdrop for my photographs.

Key Spaces and Features to Focus On

1. The Chapel:
The chapel at Runa Farm is breathtaking. Although it’s newly constructed, it feels as if it has been there for centuries, with its rustic stone façade and large windows allowing natural light to pour in. The interior is minimalist yet inviting, featuring wooden pews and a high vaulted ceiling. I’m particularly excited about photographing the ceremony here, as the natural light and intimate setting will create beautiful, emotive images.

2. The Reception Barn:
The Reception Barn is a stunning blend of old and new. The original stone walls and wooden beams are complemented by modern lighting and décor. This versatile space can be dressed up or down to suit the wedding theme, offering plenty of opportunities for both wide-angle shots of the entire space and close-ups of the details. The large doors that can be opened to let in natural light during the day are a bonus, giving me the flexibility to capture soft, romantic shots.

3. The Courtyard and Gardens:
The courtyard and gardens at Runa Farm are beautifully landscaped, providing a serene environment for guests and a perfect backdrop for portraits. The mix of wildflowers, manicured lawns, and water features add to the venue’s charm. I’m particularly looking forward to capturing the bride and groom as they take a stroll through the garden paths or share a quiet moment by one of the water features.

4. Accommodation:
The on-site accommodation is another aspect that reflects the rustic-luxe theme of Runa Farm. Each room is unique, with bespoke details, plush furnishings, and soft lighting. These rooms will be ideal for capturing pre-wedding preparations, with their intricate details and beautiful lighting adding depth and texture to the images.

Photographic Opportunities at Runa Farm

Understanding the design and features of Runa Farm has given me a clear vision of the photographic opportunities available. Here are some key moments and areas I’ll focus on:

1. Pre-Ceremony Preparation:
- Bridal Suite: The bridal suite is stunning, offering an elegant backdrop for capturing the bride’s preparations. The natural light, combined with the luxurious décor, will make for beautiful candid shots, close-ups of the dress, and intimate portraits.

2. The Ceremony:
- The Chapel Entrance: I plan to capture the grandeur of the bride’s arrival at the chapel. By positioning myself strategically, I can get both the exterior view as she arrives and the interior view as she walks down the aisle.
- Vows and Rings: The chapel’s intimate setting, enhanced by soft natural light, will be perfect for capturing the exchange of vows and rings. I’ll be ready to capture the couple’s expressions and the reactions of their guests.

3. Post-Ceremony:
- Confetti Shot: Whether outside the chapel or in the farmyard, the confetti shot will be a vibrant, joyful image. The rustic surroundings will add a charming backdrop to this classic moment.
- Couple’s Portraits: I’m excited to explore the diverse landscapes at Runa Farm for the couple’s portraits. The farmyard, gardens, and interior spaces like the Reception Barn offer a variety of settings. Shooting during the golden hour will be key to capturing the most flattering light.
- Group Shots: The courtyard and gardens are ideal for group shots, offering plenty of space and beautiful scenery.

4. Reception:
- First Dance: The Reception Barn, with its blend of rustic charm and modern elegance, will be a fantastic place to capture the first dance. The warm lighting and spacious dance floor will create an inviting atmosphere for wide-angle shots and close-ups.
- Decor Details: I’ll be sure to capture the details of the décor, from the table settings to the floral arrangements. These elements contribute to the overall aesthetic and can be beautifully highlighted in close-up shots.
- Candid Moments: As the evening progresses, I’ll focus on capturing candid moments of guests enjoying the celebration. The relaxed atmosphere of the barn and outdoor areas will provide plenty of opportunities for natural, spontaneous shots.

Lighting and Timing Considerations

Lighting is crucial in wedding photography, and Runa Farm offers a range of lighting conditions throughout the day:

- Morning and Midday: The natural light in the chapel is ideal in the morning and midday, perfect for ceremonies held during these times. The large windows fill the space with light, reducing the need for artificial lighting.

- Afternoon: The outdoor areas, including the farmyard and gardens, are beautifully lit in the afternoon. This will be the best time for outdoor portraits, group shots, and capturing details of the venue.

- Golden Hour: As the sun sets, the golden hour will provide soft, warm light that is perfect for the couple’s portraits. The farmyard, in particular, will look magical, with the golden light enhancing the rustic textures and natural elements.

- Evening: The Reception Barn will come alive in the evening with ambient lighting. This will be the ideal time to capture the first dance, speeches, and other key moments of the reception. I’ll be prepared to adjust my camera settings for low light or use additional lighting equipment if necessary.

With a clear understanding of Runa Farm’s history, design, and key features, I’m ready to capture the magic of the upcoming wedding. I can’t wait to document every moment, from the intimate pre-ceremony preparations to the joyous celebration in the Reception Barn. My goal is to create a visual story that reflects the beauty and romance of Runa Farm, ensuring the couple has memories they’ll cherish for a lifetime.
